Q: Do you have good examples of survey questions? We’re sending out a survey and I want to ask our best customers for classes they’d like to try in the winter/spring session.
A: We can give you some information on survey questions, but it would be helpful to have a little more information. Is this a general survey or a survey focusing on classes people may want you to offer?
LERN has found that the best way to get information from your past participants about new courses they may want to see is to contact your best customers. There are two ways to do this.
1. Call together a representative group of your best customers. Meet with them and ask them to help identify courses that may be in demand. This has worked very well in helping to identify new programs or programming areas.
2. Send out a very specific survey. Focus on just one thing--possible new courses. How you word the question, is, as you noted, very important. It is better to ask:
"Would you attend a course on X," rather than "Would you like us to offer a course on X."
Name one to three courses you would attend if we offered them, rather than name one to three courses you would like to see us offer. When you include the aspect of "you would attend," it helps the respondent focus on her or his interests, rather than respond based on his or her perceptions about what might be successful.
