Q: I was looking for a ratio or standard of # of student objectives/learning outcomes per contact hour of instruction. Is there a standard? For example if I am creating a 6 hour non-credit class- what is the # of learning objectives recommended for that amount of time?

A: Regarding your question on a standard for number of learning objectives per contact hour, there is no such standard that I am aware of. Typically, the number of learning objectives vary by the content of the course, the type of course or event, etc.

The concept of contact hours as related to learning is also becoming less useful as a means of describing learning. With the increasing number of online options, learning is much more likely to be self-paced, and based more directly on the speed with which an individual student is able to master required skills. Additionally, it would be an error to think that learning occurs only during contact hours. A student might spend one hour in class, and then spend an additional two hours outside of class engaged in activities that contribute to mastery of the content.

LERN recommends defining learning outcomes in terms of mastery of necessary skills based on a content-specific curriculum and measured by demonstration of mastery, rather than by time spent/contact hours.
