Instructor Pay Structures

Q: Does LERN know of standard payment structures for contract instructors? For example, do others pay according to credit vs. non-credit, subject matter, years of teaching experience, or other method.

A: There are many factors that can impact compensation for instructors at the post-secondary level. All the ones you cite above are relevant--academic rank, experience, educational level, subject matter and credit vs non-credit may all figure into the payment formula. Just as an example, here is a site that compares salaries by academic rank and subject area in higher education: http://www.higheredjobs.com/salary/salaryDisplay.cfm?SurveyID=21. These, of course are for salaried faculty, not contract instructors, but it helps to illustrate the differences that exist based on rank and discipline

Now, having said that, it is important to keep in mind the financial formula recommended by LERN when determining instructor pay. The LERN financial formula breaks down the percentage of your income that should be allocated for program expenses. For contract programs, the promotion costs are minimal, in most cases. The maximum should be no more than 5%.  Production costs, i.e., the actual costs incurred in providing your training includes instructor compensation. With contract programs the benchmark is 35% to 40% of income. These two expenses should equal 40% to 45% of your income, leaving you with an operating margin of 55% to 60%.
