Q: I have a question for you. I'm not sure if I should precede our website address (in print or when saying it to someone) with www or not. How do you know when it is safe to leave it off? Some computers will get you there only with it; others get you there fine without it. How can I make sure to make it OK for EVERYBODY? I don’t want anyone to get discouraged if they follow my directions and can’t get it.
Perhaps it’s just the printer who always wants to take it off, but that locks out some folks, doesn’t it?
A: I am not a technical expert, but my understanding is that the issue lies with how you have set up your host headers for your domain name. You can have more than one host header, but each requires its own IP address. Thus, you could have:
Host Header 1
IP: ???
Port: 80
Header: domain.com
Host Header 2
IP: ???
Port: 80
Header: www.domain.com
With such a configuration, people should be able to access your web page, without including www. That said, you need to confirm with your tech staff whether you can do this with your web address. Secondly, the printer should not be editing your copy. Including "www." as part of your URL is always the safest bet.
