Q: Does LERN provide recommendations for how to document an employee who is working from home? We are looking at allowing one day a week from home during the summer for developers but first Dr. Sharpe wanted to review what LERN recommends for how to account for their activity from home.
A: Managing telecommuters requires a different kind of thinking about work. For the past 100 years, we have defined productivity according to time spent in the office, on the job, in the classroom, etc. In the 21st century, with technology tools at our disposal, we know that time does not equate directly to productivity. A person can spend the entire day at his or her desk, and get nothing done, but can still be "at work." Or a person can spend 2 hours at her or his desk, and accomplish a great deal. The issue becomes one of measuring outcomes, rather than time inputs. When your staff are working at home, the best strategy is to set clear expectations for outcomes, and to revise job descriptions to reflect outcome requirements. This very different from time-based criteria for work, but ultimately contributes to greater productivity for employees and can greatly benefit the organization.
