Q: We are working on our data collection. Do you have any good global lists for occupations and job titles that we could borrow?

A: The best resource is probably the North American Industrial Classification System. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS, pronounced Nakes) was developed as the standard for use by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the collection, analysis, and publication of statistical data related to the business economy of the U.S. NAICS was developed under the auspices of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and adopted in 1997 to replace the old Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. It was also developed in cooperation with the statistical agencies of Canada and Mexico to establish a 3-country standard that allows for a high level of comparability in business statistics among the three countries. NAICS is the first economic classification system to be constructed based on a single economic concept. 1.Occupation is the person’s Job. Not the Job Title.

2.There is no standard list (at least not a standard list the organization should automatically be using), but instead a list developed by each organization.

3.The organization needs to develop the list and not let students just type in their occupation if the organization wants information with value.

4.Staff should gather and brainstorm the Jobs of students and come up with list. Do not get too detailed.

5.Example could be – Manufacturing, Service, Health, Unemployed, etc. I am happy to review a first brainstormed list if that would help.

6.So when analyzing data, organization would know for example the percentage of students from Manufacturing.

7.Job Title is another demographic that could be tracked, but Occupation is normally the most valuable.
