Q: I remember hearing LERN suggest using different ways to name classes for people over 60 instead of using Senior. Would you send us some ideas to use for a title for classes for people over 60.
A: The truth of the matter is that Baby Boomers (who are the senior citizens of today) don't like to be called Senior Citizens. As a consequence, it is probably best to avoid using this term for people under 75. Some names I have seen are:
Zoomers
Adults
Grown-ups
Boomers
Basically, Boomers don't like to have attention drawn to their age. Anything that does so, especially as they continue to age, can carry a negative perception. Boomers don't mind being called "adults" and they don't mind being called "Boomers." In fact, many take pride in that label. Some Boomers refer to themselves as "grown-ups" so they don't mind this term either, in the appropriate context.I would avoid trying to get too "cute" with names, as that tends to draw attention to the fact that you are trying not to draw attention to age. . . .Simple and direct is best for this group.
