Changing Course Descriptions And Titles

Q: I’m working on our spring brochure and need your help.  We have tried some classes with different titles/descriptions and we’re not making enrollment.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

A: Have you reviewed the course evaluations to look for buzzwords and features that participants liked best about the classes?  Have you reviewed the demographics of the participants to see what profiles you can get of the students that have taken the classes?  It may be helpful to have a member or members of the appropriate demographic groups (for each class) review the descriptions to see if they resonate properly with them. You could make some phone calls to past participants to see if they have suggestions – it may require that level of specific research.  Check to see if they did better in one term than another (best enrollments in Fall, for example).

Making adjustments to the titles and descriptions is one approach, and you have already done that without success.  Consider adding something “new” to the class options and highlight that in the first sentence of a new description. If you do not find any clear clues within research, you may want to drop the classes for a term and then bring them back as “updated” or “advanced” for the term in which they performed best in the past.

And if you have tried all these things and still are not generating enrollments, it may be time to drop the classes.
