Q: The article states that C.E. units are creating their own credit programs; do these units seek approval/accreditation for their credit programs the same way as the academic units? In other words, do they have a Board of Regents that grants them permission? How does this play with admissions standards, enrollment, financial aid, counting FTEs, etc?
A: This is a very complex question. Typically, there is a very structured process in which CE units work with credit programs to create new delivery formats for credit programming. The advantages that CE provides, such as flexible scheduling, stronger customer orientation, better understanding of the needs of working adults and adult learners, more flexible formats for program delivery, etc. are key to retention of students and to increasing the graduation rate. These are challenges that all institutions in higher education are facing, and CE brings the skill and expertise to deliver programs that can address these issues. All the questions you have asked are issues that must be addressed an resolved, and some institutions have done this more effectively than others. Working through the institutional requirements can be very challenging, and can take a lot of time. LERN offers two training events for those who are contemplating creation of credit programs. There is a one-day seminar offered as a pre-conference event at the LERN annual conference, and there is a week-long institute offered annually on this topic.
