Every day, tell your boy, “You are a good kid.” It’s best to tell him while he is alone and in position to lessen any embarrassment. In his room after the lights are turned off is an ideal  place and time for telling your son he is a good kid.

One day we were driving Sammie, then in middle school, home after an after school  mentoring time. Usually he jumped right out of the car and ran into his house, but this time he just sat there. After about three minutes of silence we remembered and told him he was a good kid, afterwhich he quickly jumped right out of the car and ran into his house.

We Sammie and Willielearned something that day. Photo: Sammie, right, with our son Willie.
