Q: I am looking for basic characteristics of The difference age groups, two that come to mind are Gen X's and Boomers.
I am specifically looking for the age group of 55-60.
I work in a senior center and we are considering lowering the age of our center, which is currently at age 60 and up.
I thought it would be important for our board to view this decision in the light of age characteristics and differences and needs!

A:  I have attached a copy of the generational characteristics sheet you requested. I am not exactly sure about the goals you have in mind for lowering the age for access to your senior programs. However, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Baby Boomers do not identify as "senior citizens." Even though the oldest are 67, they still consider senior centers to be for "old" people. They view themselves as younger, more vital and more active than seniors in the past. If you want to attract younger Boomers, you should definitely look at branding your program differently in order to avoid the stigma of being "old."

I am not sure why you are looking at Gen X in terms of Senior Centers. One caution here is that Gen X and Boomers have VERY different ways of recreating. They work differently and they play differently. While members of these different generations may share interests in some activities, your messaging will need to be very different for these groups. Gen Xers I know are still going to Black Sabbath concerts, and Boomers are rocking out to Bob Dylan and Santana. . .so keep in mind that some generational differences are here to stay and it is important plan programs accordingly. The oldest Xers are only 49, so are definitely not senior center candidates yet--in their minds.
