For 98% of your website visitors, you want to move them to your courses or events and get them to register. All other links not related to your classes or events are distractions.
From 5 to 10 links off the main page is the ideal range. If we had to pick a single number, it would be 7 links.
Here are the most common or best links from your main page:
Classes or Courses or Programs or Events
This is your primary programming page with the categories of your offerings. It is the most important link from your main page.
Registration
This is an essential link that should appear on the left-hand side of the page on every
web page. Even on the main page, where one should not expect too many people to want to jump immediately to registration, having the link there is an explicit reminder that registration is what your site is all about.
Contact Us
This might be the next most important link from your main page. It is usually at the bottom
of the links on the right-hand side, and/or at the top right for links below the banner.
What’s New
Just about all of your visitors and prospective participants want to know what’s new.
This is an excellent web page link.
About Us
While just about every organization has an About Us link and web page, this page should
be oriented toward marketing copy, stating why your organization is unique and distinct, and encourage people to participate with your program.
Clearly, other links also are featured from the main page, depending on the type of organization you have, your audience, and the types of services you offer.
Some programs have direct links to major programs, or to specific audiences that are served. That is an excellent technique, one that moves people more quickly to the offerings they are most interested in.
